DESIGN OF OFDM FOR 5TH-GENERATION WIRELESS SYSTEMS(5G)

   This project is design based on the papers "OFDM for 5G: Cyclic Prefix versus Zero Postfix, and Filtering versus Windowing". Owing to its low spectral decay rate, conventional orthogonal frequency-division modulation (OFDM) is unsuitable for supporting asynchronous access, user-specific subcarrier spacing and symbol period, and spectrum aggregation, all of which are envisioned for fifth-generation (5G) cellular networks. This has spurred recent work on designing new multi-carrier waveforms for 5G. In this project, a unified signal model for OFDM is presented, which encompasses variants employing either a cyclic prefix (CP) or a zero postfix (ZP) as the guard interval technique with enchanced FFT size. Matlab program is devloped based on the below design specifications,
Design Process
  • Generate random message(data) of size 4bit to apply for the scrambling process
  • Convolutional encoding process (1/2 code rate)
  • Interleaving and Modulation process
  • 16 QAM Modulation is used
  • Serial to Parallel conversion
  • Get OFDM symbol size of 4096 and apply with IFFT process
  • Add cyclic prefix (288) to OFDM process
  • Channel-AWGN and Rayleigh
  • Remove cyclic prefix and channel estimate apply FFT process
  • Demodulation Process
  • Deinterleaving
  • Convolutional decoding process and descrambler to get the original message (data)
Data subcarriers is 4000 and pilot subcarriers is 96. If we increase the modulation to 64 or 128 QAM then data rate will be increased. Data rate per frame achieved in current design is 16kb(4096*4).
